Hovering at the unlock screen or selecting one in a menu will display a description to read. What you’ll unlock at the end of a run (rogue-like, remember?) are magic spells, found in the form of cards. Don’t worry though, it’s not just you! At least you’ll unlock some stuff pretty quickly! You’re basically thrown directly into battle and almost surely will proceed to die before the second or third boss. As a player, the first thing you’ll notice when jumping in, aside from some pretty spectacular art and the gorgeous UI, is that not a whole lot is explained to you (aside from the basic controls and some mild gameplay tips). Let’s talk about actually playing the game though. On a scale from 1 – Portland, Oregon, One Step From Eden is awesome. I’m all for experimentation and finding new combinations in gaming. You’d think so, right? BUT IT ACTUALLY WORKS it’s not weird at all. why not around and throw in choice-based progression while we’re at it. So let’s just add this up real quick so we’re on the same page: action, adventure, role-playing, cards (which also serve as magic spells), real-time strategy, bullet hell, rogue-like. The first key feature mentioned is One Step From Edenbeing “Genre-bending.” That’s right before mentioning that it is also somewhat of a bullet hell game as well. Take the description on the Nintendo eShop, for instance. And I mean that both in terms of description AND gameplay. Even purely sticking to the slew of intermingling genres found in this Battle Network-esque indie game reflects just how much is going on.

A friend had asked what the game is and, well, that was the first thing that came to mind trying to describe it as simply as possible. One Step from Eden was once described as a “…fast-paced, rogue style, grid-based, real-time strategy card battler.” That was me – I said that.

This intensely chaotic indie title injects adrenaline and steroids (and probably some illicit drugs) into the veins of the classic favorite series, Megaman Battle Network, and lets it loose inside a trading card store.ġ2 Hours Played // Review Copy Provided // $19.99 The exciting rogue-like experience, One Step From Eden, is a game that throws everything at you until your reflexes transcend your own mortal hands. “The journey of 1000 Eden runs begins with a single step.” – An old, wise gamer, probably.
